A newly (geologic time) emplaced body of oil is actively setting up a hydrocarbon plume to the surface.  Until it has reached equilibrium, the plume may be weak.  Older geochemistry methods which did not allow for soil vapor concentration often times resulted in no hydrocarbon detection over virgin fields in areas with recent basin tilting or newly emplaced oil.
