Oil or gas
emplaced in a reservoir (represented by the green color) leaks trace
concentrations of light hydrocarbons to the surface where the
hydrocarbons are temporarily accumulated in the soil profile prior to
fluxing to the atmosphere. Very dilute hydrocarbon gases exist
everywhere in every sedimentary basin and these gases (orange) are
considered to be "background".
